Executive Functioning
Executive functioning skills help children and adolescents manage increasingly complex academic and daily life demands. When these skills are not developing as expected, tasks such as completing assignments, managing materials, organizing thoughts, or transitioning between activities can become frustrating and overwhelming.
Executive functioning is built on a set of interconnected cognitive processes that support learning, self regulation, and problem solving. Therapy focuses on strengthening these underlying processes while teaching practical systems and strategies that support greater independence, efficiency, and self-confidence.
Therapy may target:
- Attention, inhibitory control, and self-regulation
- Cognitive flexibility and self-monitoring
- Working memory (verbal and nonverbal)
- Planning, prioritization, and organization
- Task initiation and time management
- Problem-solving and independent learning
